The Steenbokpan area is considered disease free, peaceable and safe.
However, one should always be mindful thereof that you will be hunting in African bushveld country – sunstroke, dehydration, attack by a wounded animal or a snake bite can still become a serious threat.

First Aid and Medical Attention
A First Aid kit is available in the main Mooipan homestead next to the front (Southern) double door entrance, and 24x7 doctors plus admission to proper hospital care is available at Lephalale, a thriving mid-size bushveld town, 40 minutes’ drive from the farm. Where appropriate, air lift from the farm can be arranged – see emergency numbers above
Dangerous Species
We deliberately avoid the dangerous big game species such as elephant, rhino, buffalo or lion, so movement by foot on the farm is generally safe. Never forget, though, we are dealing with wild animals in their natural environment, and even smaller antelope, and definitely warthogs, can inflict serious wounds and must be treated with care.
Snakes
Most hunting trips are held during times when the snakes are hibernating. Even so, most snakes here will do their best to get out of your way. You will not see snakes hanging from bushes or be chased by any. Snake bites in the whole of SA are very, very rare.
If you’re concerned about the risk of a snake bite here are some numbers to put your mind at ease:
In the unlikely event of a snake bite:
Scorpions
Scorpion stings can be excruciatingly painful but rarely life-threatening and, in most cases, they will not cause any major complications. If a person experiences any of the following symptoms after a scorpion sting, they need immediate medical attention:
The best way to avoid scorpions is not to walk barefoot at any time, especially in the evenings around the barbecue fire, and not to leave clothing lying on the ground where these fellows can crawl into them
Disease
Malaria is a rare occurrence in the region, and the warm climate resulted in COVID 19 having had a very limited impact.
A fairly common risk is tick fever so it is essential to check the body regularly for ticks or tick bites. Typical tick fever symptoms include a headache, fever and sweating, muscle pains and swelling of the under-arm and thigh glands. If properly treated tick fever is not life threatening, but a doctor should be consulted.
Crime
Although neither crime not poaching has occurred on the farm over the last twenty years, we respect concerns about general farm safety.
Mooipan is considered a low risk farm, since no part of the Mooipan border is adjacent or even close to a public thoroughfare or public roads. In fact, once you leave the road at the Mooipan sign, 6 Miles (10 Km) from Steenbokpan on the Vaalwater road, one passes through two farms before arriving at the main Mooipan Gate.
The farm itself is fully secured with an electric game/security perimeter fence (fully 24 Km or 15 Miles of it!), and access gates are always locked.
Mooipan is a member of the local Farm Watch service, and for quick response and support, call:

If you’re concerned about the risk of a snake bite here are some numbers to put your mind at ease:
- Of the 170 species of snakes in Southern Africa only 20 are capably of inflicting a deadly bite.
- If you’re not within 3 m of a snake it cannot bite you and you’re in the safe zone.
- Keep a good lookout – the venomous puff adder is a lazy fellow and likes to bask in the sun, often in a footpath. Most puff adder bites are the result of a surprise encounter.
- Deaths from snake bites are rare, and even in remote locations there is sufficient time to get medical attention.
In the unlikely event of a snake bite:
- Above all, stay calm and keep the victim calm
- Call the local snake guru for his advice
